Location Summary
The road to Elounda from Aghios Nikolaos follows the shore, climbing to the top of a small mountain. The view from the top is magnificent. On a clear day the visitor can see all of Mirabello bay, and all the way to the eastern tip of Crete. The seaside village of Elounda lies on the shores of a lagoon shaped between the coast and a small peninsula and it contains the sunken remains of the lost city of Olous. On days when the water is calm, the walls of this ancient city can be seen beneath the waves. In the entrance of the lagoon stands the historical islet of Spinalonga and its medieval fortress built by the Venetians on the ruins of an ancient acropolis.
